Course Outline

This course focuses on the management of proximal femur fractures, including open reduction of subcapital and subtrochanteric patterns as well as periprosthetic fractures. It will be delivered by lectures, case-based discussions and hands-on cadaveric workshops with implants and C-arm support.

For this course, the delegate should be comfortable performing a sliding hip screw and gamma nail.

The course will cover multiple approaches to the hip including direct anterior, lateral, posterior Kocher Langenbeck approaches with practice of a direct anterior approach hemiarthroplasty, posterior column plating and nailing.

The maximum ratio for cadaveric workshops will be 4:1 for delegates to faculty and specimen. Target audience delegates will be prioritised initially, with other applicants waitlisted pending availability of places. Now open to all SET registrars. For unaccredited registrars who have been accepted onto SET program starting 2024 - please register for waitlist & notify admin to be allocated a place.

Assumed Knowledge

Basic fracture management techniques and principles including:
I. IM Nail
II. Plating
III. Soft tissue management
IV. Hip and pelvis anatomy and standard approaches
V. General knowledge of proximal femoral fixation options

Course Pre-requisites

I. Attendees should have passed OPBS
II. Attendees should be comfortable performing a sliding hip screw and gamma nail
